SpinOff Studio is proud to announce this month’s artist, luthier Toby Rzepka. From his workshop in Portland, Maine, Toby hand builds guitars and other unique instruments. He began making string instruments in 2001 after studying lutherie at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He went on to apprentice with guitar maker Stephan Connor on Cape Cod, helping build Connor Guitars’ early portal and raised-fingerboard models alongside traditional Spanish style instruments. After assistant teaching SMFA’s Guitar and Dulcimer making course, Toby spent two years in England studying Baroque and Renaissance lutherie under Roger Rose at West Dean College, earning a distinction in addition to the College’s President’s Prize in 2008. Detailed craftsmanship and innovation are benchmarks of a Rzepka creation. When he is not crafting instruments, Toby Rzepka creates sculptural objects of all size and dimension, ranging from treehouses to puppets.

Lunch with an Artist is a monthly lecture series organized by SpinOff Studio and The Harlow Gallery, occuring every fourth Wednesday of the month. Please come to SpinOff Studio, at 184 Water Street, Hallowell, for lunch with Toby Rzepka on October 24th noon to 1:00pm. You can bring your lunch or stop by Slates Bakery across the street.
